    In an election year in which Democrats nationwide suffered heavy losses, Andre Carson prevailed in his re-election bid to Congress.
    Carson, a Democrat representing the state’s Seventh District, believes the reason is simple: He took care of Indianapolis.

    Some examples of funding he brought home include: $190,000 for The Mind Trust, an education advocacy group; $381,000 for Riley Hospital for Children’s Cancer Center Expansion; $2.5 million for Indianapolis’ North Flood Control Damage Reduction Project; $500,000 for police technology; and $475,000 for transportation improvements downtown.

  • Carson elected to leadership post in Congressional Black Caucus

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Democratic Rep. Andre Carson of Indiana has been elected to a leadership position in the Congressional Black Caucus.

    Carson says he’ll be will be the caucus whip, a job that involves securing votes and helping with political strategy.

    INDIANAPOLIS — Democratic Rep. Andre Carson has easily won election to a second term from Indiana’s 7th District despite his unwavering support for President Barack Obama.

    Carson’s allegiance wasn’t a factor Tuesday in a district where Obama won 71 percent of the vote in 2008. Carson’s victory solidifies his grip on the seat that was held by his grandmother, Julia Carson, for 11 years before her death in 2007.

  • Carson Secures Funding for Marion County Sheriff’s Department

    The Marion County Sheriff’s Department will receive a nearly $500,000 federal grant to go after sex offenders.

    Democratic U.S. Rep. Andre Carson announced the Child Sexual Predator Prosecution Program grant Wednesday in a news release. It’s funded by the Justice Department through its Community Oriented Policing Services program.

    The grants provide money to help arrest and prosecute child sexual predators and enforce state sex offender registration laws.

    The Sheriff’s Department is one of 24 law enforcement agencies in 18 states to be awarded a grant through the program


  • André Carson sees progress in Afghanistan

    Rep. Andre Carson, D-Indianapolis, squeezed himself into a military hooch in Afghanistan and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a recent congressional trip to the two countries.

    Carson, one of only two Muslims in Congress, said his religion was no secret and also not an issue during the meeting with Netanyahu.

    “I spoke very passionately about my hope to see a two-state solution,” Carson said of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “He spoke very passionately about what he views as the Israeli government’s role in bringing about that peace.”

    Carson said he was awed by the rich religious traditions from people of all faiths in Tel Aviv and shared his impressions with his Jewish friends.

    The two days Carson spent in Afghanistan included a visit with Hoosier soldiers and a meeting with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan.
